Kirstie Brunomanages a privately owned music studio where she teaches students both online and in person. Bruno has an MM degree in music education from Boston University, and a BS degree in music, a minor in piano pedagogy and a certification in composition from VCSU.

Donayle Cardenas graduated from the Simón Bolívar Conservatory of Music in Venezuela. In 2013, Cardenas moved to Miami, Florida, to be a piano and music theory teacher at International School of Music. Cardenas now manages Twice as Nice Music Academy in Texas, which introduces children to the world of piano performance.

Ann Chen received her BM degree from the University of British Columbia, MM degree in piano performance and piano pedagogy from The University of Oregon and doctor of musical arts degree in piano performance from Michigan State University. Chen is currently adjunct assistant professor at Madonna University where she teaches a piano pedagogy class and private piano lessons. Chen is finishing up her term as immediate past president of the Livonia Area Piano Teacher Forum in Michigan, where she served previously on the Board as a member-at-large, vice president and president.

Rebecca Combs received a BM degree from Rice University and a MM degree from the University of Maryland, College Park. Combs teaches piano in Katy, Texas, and is also a very popular vocal and instrumental accompanist in the Greater Houston area. Combs has been a member of MTNA since 2007 and is an active participant in her local association.

Pierce Emata received both his bachelor and master’s degrees in piano performance from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, and carried out doctoral study at The University of Iowa. Emata has been involved as a member of MTNA as a past state affiliate president (NV). Emata has served on the summer piano faculty at the Interlochen Center for the Arts since 2009, where he provides private coaching and master classes to various levels of students.

Melissa Falkner, NCTM, received a BM degree in piano performance from the University of Kansas and an MM degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University. Falkner is currently the administrative director of the Legacy School of the Arts Music Department, as well as an artistic director in piano.

George Fee, NCTM, received a DM degree in piano performance from Indiana University. Fee has served as an independent music teacher for the past 38 years. Fee has been a member of MTNA for 39 years.

Susan Dersnah Fee, NCTM, received a BM degree in piano performance from Michigan State University, and MA and PhD degrees in music theory from Eastman School of Music. Fee has served as an independent teacher of piano, violin, viola, theory and pre-school music readiness classes for the past 38 years. She has held numerous MTNA state and local offices and served on the MTNA National Certification Commission as the California Certification Chair for 10 years.

Elaine Friedlander, NCTM, received a bachelor’s degree in both music education and piano performance from the Philadelphia Musical Academy (now the University of the Arts). Friedlander also received an MM degree from West Chester University.

Lillie Gardner, DMA, received BM and MM degrees in piano performance from New York University, as well as a DMA degree in piano performance from the University of Connecticut. Gardner’s work experience includes the University of Connecticut, New York University, Community School of the Arts (Mansfield, Connecticut), Crocus Hill Studios (Minnesota) and the Manhattan School of Music.

Joshua Green, NCTM, received a BM degree in piano performance and an MM degree in piano pedagogy. In addition to teaching private lessons for the past 17 years, Green has taught applied and class piano as an adjunct professor for the past 8 years.

Rita Gulliksen, NCTM, holds bachelor and master of music degrees in applied piano. She has permanent professional certification from MTNA, is a judge for the National Guild of Piano Auditions and is a member of Leschetizky. Gullliksen has taught beginner through advanced levels of piano for many years and adjudicated local festivals and guild auditions in Virginia. She is also the music director and organist at a local church.

Maura Hall, NCTM, received a BA degree in music and performance from Skidmore College and an MS ED degree in piano pedagogy from The College of Saint Rose. Hall currently manages a private studio with approximately 60 students.

Rene Johnson, NCTM, is an active participant in Northern Virginia Music Teachers Association’s events and enters her students in several events each year. She frequently serves as an adjudicator who searches for tempo, mood, technique, accuracy, tone quality, structure and interpretation in her reviewed literature.

Grant Kondo has 10 years of teaching experience, including 4 years as a professional piano teacher in a studio of more than 60 students. Kondo is currently completing his master’s in music education degree.

Sabrina Lee, NCTM, has been managing a private studio since 1996. Lee’s teaching fields include piano, music theory and composition, harmony, music history and vocal coaching. Lee holds a piano pedagogy diploma from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music of London.

Quinn Moss is a professional pianist in the Washington, D.C., area. Moss earned an MM degree and currently maintains a studio with a diverse range of students in age and skill level. Moss claims that teaching piano has proven to be one of the greatest joys in life.

Penny Ouellette, NCTM, DMA, is a dedicated teacher and adjudicator specialize in teaching piano, theory and coaching chamber ensembles. Ouellette has received both BM and MM degrees in piano performance from the University of Southern California. She holds a DMA degree from Claremont Graduate University in historical performance practice, focusing on techniques of period keyboards, and Brazilian/Cuban/Jazz infused piano repertoire.

Natasha Pence works actively as a teacher and pianist in the Greater Cincinnati area. Pence earned her BM degree in piano performance from Eastern Kentucky University and the Certificate in Piano Pedagogy from Northern Kentucky University. Pence currently serves as the assistant director of piano and keyboards at Cincinnati Music Academy. Pence offers both traditional and Suzuki private lessons, and is also a member of the Recreational Music Making (RMM) teaching team at Cincinnati Music Academy. Pence is a member of MTNA in both Ohio and Kentucky and currently serves as president of the Northern Kentucky Music Teachers Association (NKMTA).

Clinton Pratt, NCTM, earned his BM and MM degrees in piano performance. Pratt has been teaching piano and adjudicating for more than 15 years. Pratt is a member of the College of Examiners for the Royal Conservatory of Music (Toronto) where he have been adjudicating students across Canada and the United States for more than 3 years.

Olga Rua earned her doctoral degree in piano performance and pedagogy from the University of Iowa, her master’s degree from the University of Toledo and her undergraduate degree from the University of Antioquia in Medellin, Colombia. Rua has performed as a soloist and collaborative musician in Colombia, Italy, Germany and the United States. In 2016, Rua moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, with her husband and son, and joined the faculty at Cincinnati Music Academy.

Spring Seals, NCTM, has been an MTNA member for nearly 10 years. Seals currently serves as the director of certification for Texas Music Teacher Association and as secretary for the local Fort Worth Association. Seals earned a BM degree in piano performance with an emphasis in pedagogy from Oklahoma Baptist University and an MM degree in piano pedagogy from Texas Christian University.

Christie Sowby, NCTM, DMA, attended Brigham Young University, Harvard University, the New England Conservatory and the University of Utah for her music degrees. She earned a BM degree in piano performance, MM degree in piano performance and a DMA degree in piano performance with a minor in musicology. Sowby’s judging experiences include Utah Music Teachers Association, Federation, AIM, PianoMarvel, Enkor International Music Competition and Distinguished Young Women (formerly America’s Junior Miss).

Cheryl Staats holds an MFA degree in piano performance from the University of Minnesota. Staats has also completed post-graduate studies in piano performance at Indiana University and the University of Texas at Austin. Staats is a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music, a member of the College of Examiners of The Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) and a member the National Music Certificate Program (NMCP). In Colorado, she held many MTNA officer positions in the Boulder Area Music Teachers Association and was vice president for the Colorado State Music Teachers Association.

Ilse Sutchar is a classically trained pianist who earned a diploma for piano pedagogy from the Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, Austria. After moving to the United States, Sutchar received a BA degree in music education and worked as a music teacher for 10 years in a public school.

JohnWillard Utuk has been playing and performing for the past 24 years as a recitalist, freelance musician and accompanist for student choruses and instrumentalists. Additionally, Utuk has been teaching privately for 6 years, with students ranging from age 5 to collegiate and retired adults.

Richard Van Dyke, NCTM, DMA, is an independent music teacher in Cincinnati, Ohio, and adjunct professor of piano at Northern Kentucky University. Van Dyke has presented at local, state and national conferences on preparing students to successfully perform advanced repertoire.

Kassandra Weleck, NCTM, began playing piano at age 4. Weleck earned her BM degree in piano performance from Bowling Green State University and MM degree in piano performance/pedagogy from Arizona State University. Weleck has been a piano teacher since age 16, including as a teaching assistant in a piano preparatory program during graduate school, and currently teaches both privately and at the local community college (music courses, piano courses and private lessons).
