Changes to This Policy

Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) may from time to time make changes to this Privacy Policy to reflect changes in legal or regulatory obligations or changes in the manner in which we deal with personal information. We will post any revised version of this Privacy Policy on our website. Any changes will take effect on the effective date stated in the revised Privacy Policy. If there are significant changes we may provide more prominent notice or obtain your consent as required by law. If you do not wish to accept the changes, you should cease using the website. Your continued use of the MTNA website after we have posted a revised Privacy Policy indicates your agreement to the revisions.

This Privacy Policy is effective commencing on May 25, 2018.

European Union Privacy Notice

This Privacy Notice applies to our processing of personal data of residents of the European Union (EU) who are covered by the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and is a supplement to our Privacy Policy.

Who We Are

MTNA is the preeminent association of music teachers. Its mission is to advance the value of music study and music making to society and to support the professionalism of music teachers.

Personal Data

Personal Data is a legal term that describes any information that identifies a particular person.

For purposes of the GDPR, personal data is any information that can identify you, either directly or indirectly, such as a name, MTNA member number, your IP address, address, or information about your physical, physiological, genetic, mental, economic, cultural or social identity.

We are providing you this notice because we have collected some of your personal data from you. We collect your data for a variety of reasons, depending on whether you are a member, a prospective member, or a visitor to the website.

Why We Collect and How We Use Personal Data

The collection and use of personal data is important for MTNA to support our mission and serve our membership in the following manner:

  • Deliver the information, programs, products and/or services that meet members’ needs.
  • Evaluate and respond to members’ questions and requests.
  • Provide members with support and membership benefits.
  • Communicate with membership through various channels, including mail, email, telephone, apps, online chats, in person, and social media.
  • Process members’ payments and account adjustments.
  • Create and manage membership and account registrations.
  • Conduct and administer surveys and studies.
  • Evaluate and improve our educational offerings, services, member benefits, and other operations.
  • Protect against and prevent fraud and unauthorized transactions, investigate complaints and claims, and provide other security protections.
  • Comply with and enforce applicable legal obligations, MTNA’s policies, and MTNA’s terms and conditions.
  • Perform other business functions consistent with MTNA’s mission and serve the membership.

How Long Do We Keep Your Personal Data?

Visitors to MTNA’s website are anonymous. Personal information, such as your e-mail address is not collected. Your IP address (computer Internet address) is traced, but not linked to any personally identifiable information so that MTNA may track the number of visitors to various areas of the website and the amount of time that is spent in each area. Other information that may be collected automatically is the type of computer and operating system you are using, which is supplied by your browser.

If you are a member, we will keep your personal data on an ongoing basis for so long as we have a legitimate interest to inform you of our services, or until our relationship has terminated, as the case may be. We are required to retain certain information in accordance with the law, such as information needed for income tax and audit purposes. How long certain kinds of personal data should be kept may also be governed by specific business-sector requirements and agreed practices.>/p>

You have the following rights concerning your personal data that we hold and process that you can exercise at any time:

  • Right of access – you have the right to request a copy of the information that we hold about you.
  • Right of rectification – you have a right to correct data that we hold about you that is inaccurate or incomplete.
  • Right to be forgotten – in certain circumstances you can ask for the data we hold about you to be erased from our records.
  • Right to restriction of processing – where certain conditions apply to have a right to restrict the processing.
  • Right of portability – you have the right to have the data we hold about you transferred to another organization.
  • Right to object – you have the right to object to certain types of processing such as direct marketing.
  • Right to judicial review: if MTNA refuses your request under rights of access, we will provide you with a reason as to why. You have the right to complain as outlined in the process below.

Please note: we will not be able to delete information that is required to maintain our business purpose or that is required to facilitate your contract with us. All the above requests will be forwarded on to other parties holding and processing your data where appropriate.

What forms of ID will I need to provide to access this?

You will need to send an email from the email address account associated with your personal data as stored on MTNA's systems.

Under what circumstances will MTNA contact me?

Our aim is not to be intrusive, and we undertake not to ask irrelevant or unnecessary questions. Moreover, the information you provide will be subject to protections and procedures to minimize the risk of unauthorized access or disclosure.

Consent

For certain types of personal data, we have asked for your consent to use the data for certain described purposes at the time you provided it. You may withdraw your consent at any time.

When you give us your consent, you are giving us permission to process your personal data specifically for the purpose identified in the consent request. Where we ask you for additional personal data, we will obtain your consent to our proposed use of that data where required, and always tell you why and how the information will be used.

Sharing With Third Parties

MTNA also makes member contact information available to third parties offering products and services. This limited information may include names, job title, company/institution/studio and address. Phone numbers, fax numbers and e-mails will not be disclosed. For a complete and up-to-date list of the third parties we are currently using, please send an email to mtnanet@mtna.org.

Any third parties that we may share your data with are obliged to keep your details securely, and to use them only for the purposes identified within their agreement with MTNA. When they no longer need your data, they will dispose of the details in line with the agreement. If we wish to pass your personal data onto any additional third parties, we will only do so once we have obtained your consent, unless we are legally required to do otherwise.

US-Based Organization

MTNA is headquartered in the United States and all of our data processing activities occur in the United States. Any personal data you provide to us, including through our websites and apps, will be transferred to, processed, and stored in the United States. By providing us your personal data or using our websites and apps, you acknowledge that the United States has standards for the processing and storage of personal data that may not be equivalent to (and may be less comprehensive than) those in the country where you reside and/or are a citizen, and you consent to our collection, transfer, processing, and storage of your personal data in the United States.

Children

Our websites and apps are not intended for use by children under the age of 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal data from such children. If a child under the age of 13 has provided us with personal data, we ask that a parent or guardian contact us so that the personal data can be deleted.
